Shopping Cart Commerce still has a place in the web
18 September 2008 - By Sean Fishlock
I must admit, not so long ago as a company we used to sneeze at shopping cart solutions and small business websites. Which is ironic as we were the first company in Victoria to build a payment gateway and one that went by the tagline "E-Commerce Websites" primarily serviced small business. But we've come full circle since and you will find that we work on the occasional shopping cart website.
A vast majority of the sites we rolled out in our first few years were either e-commerce or shopping cart websites. Then the landscape of the web changed as shopping cart solutions began to emerge left right and centre. Rather than join the run of the mill we moved on to other things, preferring instead to build shopping cart functionality into our software and Freestyer where it was needed. Somewhere along the line, we dropped the functionality due to low demand. Shopping cart solutions became a specialised field and we continued to only use our own products, we would implement high end e-commerce solutions and payment gateways for corporate clients. We would get the occasional enquiry from small business about shopping carts, but not be geared to service them.
In the last 12 months, we've built a handful of shopping cart websites.
I think there are a few reasons for this.
Firstly, there is a boom in micro business and work from home businesses looking to grow into small business.
Secondly small business now see web companies as less of a commodity. Many have been burned by the dubious promises of fly-by-night Internet companies and basically wasted a lot of money. With our track record of growing small businesses through quality Internet marketing and development, we are seeing an increasing demand from small businesses wanting to engage our services. They realise that price isn't always everything and Datalink make a very good choice.
Finally, with the emergence of stable and reliable specialised open source systems for e-commerce there is a lot of choice and a lot of functionality, but most of it is way beyond the non-technical smallbusinessperson, and for that matter also beyond many web designers. Some of these systems are very stable and reliable with large developer communities.
Being open source, it means that we can deliver complex shopping cart solutions but not charge our clients a licence fee for it. So we've become familiar with osCommerce and begun to use it on some of our projects. We educate our customers as to the advantages of the approach as well as the disadvantages (such as maintaining security)when working with third party products.
Then there is the availability of royalty free images and website design templates which can reduce the overall cost of web design. While professional design is almost always better, we have found that businesses will gradually grow into professional web design as we can quickly and cost-effectively roll out an initial revenue model and give them a roadmap for further growing their business. Because our customers are happy customers they almost ways engage our design services and content management system later to get more engaging websites.
While our tagline is no longer "e-commerce websites" and we've moved towards "creative e-business", the end result is the same - being creative to implement the best website solution for business, only these days almost every business needs a web presence.
A recent example project is Tiny Tootsies, a micro business with thesole function of selling baby shoes. For this business, the shopping cart and website were integral to the business. They already had a first generation website, logo and visual identity, so building a shopping cart solution with a template enabled them to get trading online quickly and easily. The advantage of working with Datalink was that we were able to deliver and Internet Marketing strategy as well as customise the osCommerce solution to get the best results for their specific requirements. We were able to manage and maintain the website and provide ongoing upgrades and updates.

Since launching their new website traffic and sales have increased substantially and continue to increase.
So in essence, we are a team geared for big business that also sometimes services the small end of town. We are not in the business of building cheap websites and walking away. We don't work with businesses with cashflow problems, just the ones with solid business plans and money to spend.
So if you are genuinely looking for a web developer who can bring you these sorts of benefits but won't ask us to do it for $500 and realise that the cost might be thousands but the overall benefit to your business with be manyfold greater, then you're probably our sort of customer.
