Is your hosting company able to withstand the heat?

30 January 2009 - By Scott Davey

For those reading outside Melbourne, you may not know that we're currently in the middle of the hottest heatwave for a very long time.  We are in the 4th day of 40+ degree days, and are looking forward to a "cool change" of 35 on the weekend.  This is affecting Melbourne's power supply by introducing brownouts and blackouts.

It's times like these that I think of my time training for my pilot's license.  You see, contrary to popular myth it is very easy to fly a plane - you can become competent at flying in about 15 hours, at least when the conditions are good and everything works as expected.   However, what you practice again and again beyond the first 15 hours is exception handling - how to handle emergencies, what to do when things aren't going right.  And this ultimately defines the difference between a good and bad pilot.

The same goes for hosting.

This Melbourne heat wave, and the corresponding power outages it has caused, has stressed many Melbourne-based hosting companies.  But Datalink has handled it in its stride.  You see, Datalink's data centre has had power disruptions every day this week (as I write this we are running on a diesel generator), but Datalink's servers are engineered from the ground up to handle this situation, so we have maintained 100% uptime during this period.

The difference is in the attention to detail.  Datalink's data centre draws power from two separate power grids at street level, and every Datalink server is cross-cabled to both of them.  Our servers are also protected by a backup UPS and a diesel generator which kick in when the power kicks out, preserving uptime.   This is one example of many that highlights the difference that quality engineering can make.

Can your website handle the heat?
