Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign success stories
Nothing is better, in search engine optimisation (SEO) terms, than #1 ranking in Google. Google is the search engine leader and a top result can position your company as a market leader, not to mention significantly boost your sales and brand recognition. It is not suprising why many consider it to be the holy grail of online marketing. Despite what some snake oil companies will tell you - noone can guarantee you a number one. I'll look at some examples of high ranking websites to analyse the elements of successful SEO practice.
While we don't particularly specialise in it, we realise that it is a real advantage for web designers to be good at it and as a result, we've had a lot of experience with SEO. We like to keep up with the latest trends, and we've been adapting to the changing technologies for nearly 10 years.
More recently, we've had great results particularly with websites that use the Freestyler CMS. Freestyler tends to generate search engine optimised sites out-of-the-box. I think a big reason for this is that we have bottled a lot of our SEO knowledge into the software. So there are plenty of features, like friendly urls, keyword metadata and RSS that lend themselves to improved results. That is not to play down the importance of our consulting services. Careful markup in the web design process and general advice to customers on copywriting, link popularity and page rank strategies can sometimes make the difference between a Top 10 ranking and a number 1.
So I thought I'd take some time out to some of the better ones, by pointing out their rankings for keywords at the time of writing.
Google Results for selected companies
Here are some relevant results at time of writing:
| Client | Website | Selected Keywords | Worldwide rank | Australia rank |
| Australian Childcare Super Fund | www.accsf.com.au | "childcare super" | #1 | #1 |
| FastTrack | www.fasttrack.net.au | "recruitment management software" | #2 | #1 |
| Athletics Australia | www.athletics.asn.au | "athletics" | #6 | #1 |
| Optometrists Association | www.optometrists.asn.au | "good vision" | #8 | #2 |
| Plan Australia | www.plan.org.au | "child sponsorship" | #5 | #2 |
| Superpartners | www.superpartners.com.au | "superannuation administrator" | #7 | #6 |
Note that the selected keywords aren't always the obvious ones. For many companies, especially those relevant to their industry, the obvious keywords are not necessarily the ones they want to be found on. For example, it wouldn't make sense for people to find us using the word "datalink" (unless we had a very strong industry brand), as the word doesn't relate directly to our products and services. A good keyword focus is instead on the products and services that an organisation primarily wants to promote.
Conclusions
Of course, we're not claiming that these are the best possible results, but we think they're pretty good for the base package. You're welcome to claim otherwise.
There are companies that have a focus on SEO add-on services, and they'll build you a website that doesn't perform well on its own. I'd ask why they don't just put in the extra effort in the first place. I guess it is probably like the way some software companies make releases full of bugs to sell support upgrades. We may well be doing ourselves out of business. Our focus, however is on success. None of the sites I have mentioned have required any particular SEO add-ons, they all crept to the top of the list after a few months. We figure that if your website does well and gets more traffic and sales, then you are more likely to come back to us to get other work done or next time you design your site. Of course search engines love content, and Freestyler helps our customers to generate and manage large amounts of search engine food. So typically, we're 80% there already.
There is Always Room for Improvement ...
Having said all said this, search engines do change their technologies all the time. For instance, Google has recently added support for Sitemap XML files which can improve your search results. In response, we have added features to the new Freestyler to automatically generate these. This is just one example of how we keep pace with the search engines. There are other things which can't be automated, which require ongoing tweaking and we provide tune-up services to get the best results for these. We also use PPC (pay per click) methods to give customers additional exposure.
Personally, I feel that social bookmarking will begin to influence search engines in future, as services such as de.licio.us become more popular ... eventually shifting the focus from computer calculation of relevance to human popularity ... but that is another story.
So there you go. I intend to follow this post with some analysis of the techniques we used with these sites and others that we haven't used as well as why we think they will be successful, so stay tuned.
